The Devil's Advocate

The democratic and political shifts that occurred throughout Brazil’s 2019 elections piqued my keen interest as well as my great concern. As a result, I decided to transform my own opinions and self-reflections into a series titled The Devil’s Advocate. The aim of this piece is to document, investigate and comment on political concerns related to Brazil's bureaucratic leadership.

Alongside many other absolutist politicians, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro can be regarded as one of the most autocratic and controversial leaders in modern history. Political and economic crises in Brazil have been issues I have witnessed ever since I can remember; however, the turmoil and disruption caused by Bolsonaro’s government far exceed the problems the country has faced in the past.

Bolsonaro’s regime has been the biggest disruption of democracy genocide in the history of the country, which is why it deserves to be documented, acknowledged and debated. I decided to use photography as my weapon to further challenge and explore some of the issues tied to the idea of “Bolsonarism” and the bloody fate that was nearly sealed for Brazil and its people.
