Rice is more than a staple food — it is a universal thread that weaves diverse traditions, cultures, and identities. Across the world, this staple ingredient takes on countless forms — shaped by local ingredients, landscapes, and histories. Within Each Grain captures the rituals and preparations of the people that bring this humble grain to life.  

Through much introspection, research, and knowledge transfer, I came to see that rice was more than food; it is a symbolic act of historic and cultural preservation. Despite its many variations, rice transcends cultural boundaries within different parts of the world; creating a shared familiarity among people; bridging differences, and forging new connections. From the creamy rice puddings of Egypt to the aromatic fried rice of China, and the rich Serbian stuffed peppers to the comforting rice and steak of Brazil — these dishes serve as a testament to rice’s symbol of community, family, and identity. 

In an attempt to illustrate rice’s significance in different socio-cultural contexts, I photographed a series of four families of diverse ethnicities: Brazilian, Chinese, Egyptian, and Serbian. As a means of celebrating the authenticity embedded in their stories, these photographs visually explore the various textures, colours, and techniques within each dish. This piece poses a reflection on the deeper meaning of rice — how it shapes our lives, tells our stories, and carries on legacies. Through this culinary exploration, Within Each Grain invites viewers to explore rice through different cultural settings, reminding us of the shared humanity found in every grain.
