Look Far in the Willows

Similarly to photography, writing also grants us the ability to explore and express experiences of great significance and impact. For me, my friend’s writing piece titled, Dolce Domum (Home Sweet Home) was one of most impactful pieces I've encountered through these last few months. Mainly, the piece focuses on the journey as well as the reconnection process between her and her grandfather, whom she hadn’t visited since the age of thirteen. It also discusses the ways in which she navigated through the judgment as well as preconceived notions held by some of her relatives back in the Philippines.

Look Far in the Willows is a series inspired by  Dolce Domum’s main themes which consist of the doubts and insecurities about her identity and the preconceived notions she faced from her relatives back home. I also decided to include the process and introspect behind her reconnection with her grandad. In order to effectively convey these ideas, text and double exposures were used as a means of emphasizing both the beauty and struggles of her challenging journey.

Aside from the messages included in the piece itself, a short interview was conducted which not only helped me better understand her feelings but also the context behind certain segments of the essay. Reflecting upon these themes, this series aims to create a piece that visually expresses Dolce Domum’s striking and heartwarming trajectory.
